Rego Rip Off: Little relief in sight

There’s a sting in the tail to the ACT Government’s promise to lower excessive caravan rego costs.

Chief Minister Andrew Barr has confirmed he will deliver his election promise and cut the charges later this year.

However the bad news is Mr Barr says they will be lowered to be in line with NSW charges, which are the second highest in Australia and only slightly below those in the ACT.

The NSW Government also promised to review caravan rego charges prior to the last state election in 2015, but has since failed to act.

The Minister behind the promise, Duncan Gay, was recently dumped from cabinet and the newly installed Roads Minister, Melinda Pavey, isn’t offering much hope.

A spokesman for the new Minister this week defended the fact NSW will have the highest charges in Australia, saying the revenue raised helped pay to improve roads.
